Guide for families

What we took out of the book to keep it short. Here it is in full.

Why are they afraid of the dark?

Fear of the dark is NORMAL. It's an evolutionary fear: our ancestors survived because they were careful in the dark. That "caution" is still in your child's brain.

Between ages 3 and 7, something special happens:

  • Imagination is VERY powerful.
  • They still can't tell reality from fantasy.
  • The brain "fills in" what it can't see with what it imagines.

Result: the chair becomes a bear. The curtain becomes a monster. Fear is NOT the problem. The problem is not knowing what to do with it.

Why a flashlight?

Because it VISUALLY demonstrates that the child has control. It's not magic. It's physics.

  1. The child sees a shadow that scares them.
  2. Points the flashlight.
  3. The shadow changes (shrinks, moves, disappears).
  4. Says the phrase: "I'm in charge with the light!"

The act of DOING something breaks the fear cycle. Fear paralyzes. Action liberates.

Protocol: "There's a monster!"

When your child says there's something in the room:

  1. VALIDATE: "I see your body got scared. I'm here with you."
  2. TOOL: "Grab the flashlight. Point at the shadow. What do you see?"
  3. PHRASE TOGETHER: "It's a shadow. It's a drawing. I'm in charge with the light."
  4. NAME IT: "What's that shadow called? Give it a funny name."
  5. BREATHE: 3 dragon breaths (Flower and Candle for the little ones).

If the fear is very intense or very frequent (every night for weeks), consult a professional.

Script for tough nights (20 seconds)

"I see your body got scared. I'm here with you."
"Let's try a tool for 20 seconds and then decide."
"We don't have to win today. Just practice and feel safe."

What if fear comes back?

It will. That's normal. It doesn't mean the technique failed.

The brain needs REPETITION to learn new responses. Every time you use the flashlight and the phrase, the brain learns: "When I see a shadow, I have something to do."

Over time, the child won't even need the flashlight. The phrase alone will be enough. And then, not even that. They'll have internalized: "Shadows aren't dangerous."

Shadow puppets from the book

Point the flashlight at the wall and make these shapes with your hands. The child discovers: "I create the shadows, I'm in charge."
